The True Definition of Internet Marketing
There’s no PhD you can strive for to be in the Internet marketing industry. It’s about as on the job training as you can get and you have to learn by doing. Some people entering the field aren’t exactly sure what Internet marketing actually is so we need to make that clear first and foremost.
We must first determine what Internet marketing isn’t. It’s not a job for con artists and you definitely should not participate in spamming. You aren’t just going to sell things on eBay and you won’t need your own website that sells products you have to keep in stock.
There are so many ways to get into Internet marketing that most people will have no trouble finding something that suits. Your opportunities are virtually endless, and may include one or more of the following:
- Selling digital downloads (information products like eBooks)
- Promoting other people’s products for a commission (affiliate marketing)
- Selling on eBay or other auction sites
- Running a membership site
- Selling your online services (writing, graphics, etc.)
- Owning a website that sells dropshipped or wholesale items
And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Being a newcomer to Internet marketing, you might be worried that you don’t have anything to sell. Many people make a good income without ever stocking any product of their own and it can be the same for you.
There are no age boundaries or gender issues with Internet marketing. It’s a fact that quite a few teenagers have started Internet marketing and used nothing but an idea to catapult their way to success.
There are shady Internet marketers but in my opinion the best way to success is to build a solid foundation and a good reputation for your business so it can support you for many years.
Consistent Marketing Efforts Equals Consistent Rewards
I was reading over at Tiffany Dow’s blog today about a person with a lot of sites and not much income to show for it.
I feel for the person who has lots of sites with little income. I totally agree on Tiff’s recommendation of culling as it’s something I’ve been doing . I’ve bought 50 domains in the last year. All of those domains make between $200 to $300 a month so culling will give me the same income with the ability to increase it with focused effort.
When it comes time to renew the domain I check to see how much income the site has made and if it hasn’t paid it’s rent it goes. Not exactly a scientific method and I’m sure I’m letting go of some gems but I have to focus on my moneymakers.
I’ve now worked out which sites I’m going to keep and continue to work on them. I don’t worry so much about competition anymore as it takes too much time and energy. If you keep plugging away your site will eventually get there regardless.
My favorite strategy is to write for The Best Spinner article database. Once your articles are approved it’s pretty much a trickle effect of backlinks which Google loves apparently. They take a while to write as you have to make them sound good even when spun but it’s worth it. My basic method is to write 3 sentences for every one.
This strategy is working pretty good and coupled with my efforts with article submission helper I can manage to get a good portfolio of links to my sites. One neglected site I thought I might let go actually had quite a few backlinks and was sitting at no. 3 for its keyword. It’s a mini site with not much content but with all of those backlinks I’m sure I can figure out a way to increase its earnings as it has managed to pay for itself. I had earlier submitted only 2 articles to The Best Spinner about 8 months ago.
That’s proof enough for me that if I continue to create content everyday a site will eventually get to a dominant position regardless of the competition.
