First up, this is one of my favorite ways to make money online. There is probably more online internet affiliate programs to make money with than there are mobile phones, and that’s a lot. Whatever your into or know a lot about there is an affiliate program out there that is tailored made for you.

So what exactly is an affiliate program. At the most basic level an affiliate program is one where you promote something that has been created by someone else. It may be an actual object like a TV or video game. A good example of this sort of program can be found at Commission Junction where you can become a member and promote their many products. There are other affiliate programs that promote nothing but downloadable e books.  These e books form a myriad of topics from  how to get rid of an acne problem right through to how to stop your neighbors dog from crapping in your yard. Probably the best example of this is Clickbank which has been around since the Internet was a baby.

Because there are so many affiliate programs to make money with how do you decide which is the best one for you?  Most affiliate programs are free but there are a few paid ones as well.  An example of a paid affiliate program is one where you have to pay for their product to be able to market it as an affiliate. I haven’t seen too many of these around to be honest but they do exist.  Programs like Shareasale and Commission Junction are the front line for vendors selling everything from salt shakers to bird baths. Commission Junction or Shareasale will  receive the commission and take out their cut. You get whatever is left over.  A big disadvantage for the start up affiliate is that Shareasale and their like usually require you to have a website and preferably one that is closely related to the product that you are signing up to sell, so it can be hard to get approved.

There are many ways to get paid as an affiliate but it is usually via some form of commission structure. You may be paid a set commission for a sale of the product or with somebody like a Shareasale you get a base commission. If you make a certain amount of sales your commission rate can go up. There a also many examples of multi tiered affiliate programs. Multi tier means you get paid when you sign someone up to a membership site or program. If your recruit then signs someone up you also get a cut albeit smaller than the original signup. The beauty of these is that they are usually paid member sites and you keep receiving commissions as long as your recruits stay paid up members. A lot of people make a lot of money from these programs.

Many affiliate programs have a payment threshold before you can get paid. Once your account reaches a certain level, usually $50 or $100 they will send you a check. The next most popular method of payment form would be via direct deposit but this isn’t usually viable if you live in a country other than the affiliate program owner. Paypal is also rapidly gaining popularity as a payment method and is my personal favorite. Your payment is deposited into your Paypal account and they handle all the currency conversions.

There are many ways to find affiliate programs but my favorite method is through the use of a keyword research and analysis program such as Micro Niche Finder. This program is brilliant and has many features built in that will save you heaps of time doing your research. Type in a base phrase, see what comes up and check out whether it is a viable market or not right from within the program itself. I then go to Google and type in the phrase + affiliate to see what is available (you can also do this in the program) .  There’s not many keywords that you can research and NOT find an Affiliate program for.
